Between Victorious' !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and The Digital Burnout's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ... I now feel rather old (at least in comparison).
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Having talked about my video gaming youth learning at home being with a TI99 4/A and that my first racing video game was Atari's Night Driver...

I turned 32 on Saturday.

I never played Halo. I have no idea why.

There are more olds here than you think. Myself included.

is dodge 'em considered a racing game? Are you older than that? (35 here)

Don't feel too bad. I usually school people with my useless knowledge of trivia that "only people who grew up in XX decade" know.

I just bought an N64 again the other day. Waiting on an Amazon shipment of 3 more controllers, Ocarina of Time, and Gauntlet Legacy. Who remembers N64 Christmas? N64 Christmas was best Christmas.

You're not old. I bet you're not even 1/4 of Gimi's age.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:19 |

39, my first was Atari's Night Racing which I played in an arcade when I short enough that my dad had to help with the pedals.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:19 |

I bought an N64 last year. Drunk Mario Kart is the shit. I had to dig my huge CRT out of the bottom of the closet. I also bought a Dreamcast. Because NFL2K1 and some fighting game I loved.

Oh, I was thinking of you, Brian the Life of, and DesertDog when I posted this. I know that there are a few...

Perspective... =) And I should be much older than a quarter of Gimmi's age, otherwise he's REALLY old.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:20 |

Is 30 the new old?
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:21 |

I challenge your oldness.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:21 |

Yeah, my roommate keeps saying we need to get Mario Kart. I just don't feel like spending $40 on it right now. lol Soon though. Dude, Dreamcast kicks ass! Phantasy Star Online is one of my absolute favorite games of all time. Crazy Taxi was another great one on Dreamcast.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:21 |

34 here. Pretty sure Pole Position or something was my first racer. Had a Odyssey console because Atatis were too pricey I guess.... not sure they made a racing game for it.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:21 |
|
We had an Atari but I don't remember much about it other than Combat. I'm not sure I have ever had a racing game as a child. Unless you count Spy Hunter. I mean why would you? There's no racing in it.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:22 |
|
My first gaming system was an Atari, but my parents were cheap lol, I'm 27, almost 28.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:23 |
|
Don' feel bad, youngster. The first video game I played was Pong.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:23 |
|
I had a TI99 4/A, Atari 2600, original NES, SNES... and spent way too many hours in arcades...
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:24 |

I figured you'd chime in. =)

34. I miss Road Rash.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:24 |

Well, if you start reading his stories he must be at least 130!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:25 |
|
Fellow old here.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:25 |
|
Ohhhh. That was harsh. I hope I am as cognitive as he is my mid eighties.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:25 |

Same.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:26 |

That game was awesome! The physics were. Uh... LOL.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:26 |
|
Well, even if he were magically 130, I'm still older than 1/4 of his age (I'm gonna be 40 soon).
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:27 |
|
There was a 2600 that was around before me and I was given a brand new NES when it was released.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:27 |
|
Wow. Now me and Gimi have a partner.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:28 |
|
I saved up my allowance and did odd jobs around the neighborhood to buy the NES around when it came out. (got the one with ROB and the light blaster - Gyromite / Duck Hunt).
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:28 |

At the start of every race you could pull back a kick and knock the computer biker next to you off their bike every time.
Goddamn Shuriken 1000 handled like shit and the Ferruci 850 was made of glass.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:29 |

Soul Caliber was the one we always played.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:31 |
|
I didn't play Soul Caliber until it was on Xbox. I really want to get Super Smash Bros. for N64 again too. Also, Mario Party... although that may result in someone committing murder. lol
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:31 |
|
I always loved it when I stole the chain. Layin waste with that thing.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:31 |
|
Thankfully my brother is 5 years older than me, probably the only reason we got it when we did.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:32 |
|
LOL. I used to just race down the road swinging it over my head for no reason.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:33 |
|
well I remember going to the arcade (tilt) in the mall to play. Atari was my first at home. Go mouse trap!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:33 |
|
Yep, same here.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:35 |
|
Arcade's were my home away from home for much of my youth. If I wasn't outside running around the neighborhood or playing sports, I had found my way to an arcade to spend my allowance.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:35 |
|
SWEET.
I think.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:36 |
|
Not many arcades around anymore. I remember on Sat mornings getting a couple bucks from my mom and riding my bike(No gdamn helmet or pads!) a good mile to the arcade and would spend most of the morning there. Looking back they probably loved the time I was gone. LeMans was the arcade of choice. If my older brother went I could go to Malibu which was an arcade that also had GoCarts, because I had to cross an busy overpass. Oh the days!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:36 |
|
I'm 37, but 30 isn't too old. As Jay Z once said, 40 is the new 30. So 30 isn't old according to him.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:37 |
|
You can read that however you would like. =)
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:37 |
|
I might not have gotten an NES right when they came out because I was 3 when they first came to the US it was early 80's though.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:38 |
|
The stuff I did when I was a kid, that I would NEVER let my kids do now... LOL.
We had a Malibu here as well. Those places were awesome, but it was too far for me to get to by myself, so only if I went with others or was driven there.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:39 |
|
I was 10 or 11 (can't recall if I got mine in '85 or '86).
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:40 |
|
Was that the game with some Soundgarden songs in the soundtrack?
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:40 |
|
Good Times.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:41 |
|
Oh CRAP. I saw that pic and immediately had a flashback.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:41 |
|
We had a ColecoVision and an A2600 growing up. I don't think I had racing games on those consoles, but did wander over to the store to play Spy Hunter and Pole Position quite frequently.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:41 |
|
Oh yeah. All day long.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:41 |
|
So you're only ~5 years older than me if that makes you feel any better.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:42 |
|
I bought an N64 way after the fact so that I could finally play Mario 64... I got the most hideous model ever. It was on sale at Toys R'us for like $25 (new), so I figured, that was cheap enough...
(It's the pokemon edition, Pikachu's cheeks light up when you turn it on)
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:43 |
|
I just went to a classic arcade game and pinball expo last weekend. Epic.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:44 |
|
It was! Plus some Monster Magnet. But not on console. Only PC and 3DO
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:45 |
|
39 here as well. Battlezone represent!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:45 |
|
Wireframe 3-D FTW!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:45 |
|
Well that was a very wise investment! To buy a Pikachu N64 now, you're looking at about $85 to $100+ used. The N64 I picked up, well actually my roommate called to tell me about it and then bought it and I paid him back, cost $45 at a head shop in Wisconsin. lol
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:46 |
|
Perfect, just in time for me to marry a 22-25 year old stripper. PRIMETIME!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:47 |
|
Wow, you're not kidding are you? That's really really weird. LOL
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:49 |
|
Yep! Average used N64 will run around $40-50 or so. Special or limited editions can be worth far more. I'm hanging on to this one as long as possible. Enough will get broken or thrown away, that eventually the working ones will qualify as antiques. I'm also gonna call my dad this weekend and have him dig my NES and SNES out of storage and ship them to me. Mainly because I want to play them again, but also I want to make sure they're kept in good shape.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:51 |

Now go find out if Helga is an F1 fan.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:56 |

i remember when outrun came out. It was $.50!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:58 |

I've been looking for a pinball machine for awhile. They are either in horrible disrepair or so expensive. I'll get one at some point I suppose.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 15:59 |
|
I still recall the day that my local arcade (Space Shuttle) reduced the sit-down MOVING Afterburner II cabinet from $.75 to $.25. That was an amazing day (and also the day I finally beat the game).

Here's a nostalgic Malibu commercial.

This place just opened up here: http://danddpinball.com/ It's really pretty cool.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 16:08 |

Hey, I had TI99 4/A too! With the speech synthesizer, tape backup, and amber monochrome screen! It was so cool, you could...
Wait, does this make me an old too?
![]() 06/11/2014 at 16:10 |

How much are PSX worth now? Just for the giggles.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 16:11 |

If you had it within the brief period of time where it was relevant, yes... yes it does... =)
![]() 06/11/2014 at 16:13 |

According to a quick Ebay search, $170ish to over $200. Amazon didn't yield any results.

:O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
![]() 06/11/2014 at 16:31 |

I'll just say my Dad brought it home brand-spanking new.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 16:34 |

Ours was less than a year old when it was given to us. so... I have an idea of where you may be coming from.

I'll just leave this here:
![]() 06/11/2014 at 18:01 |

I remember rolling background and the car was a chunk of plastic above it. Olds, yeah I got 'em...
![]() 06/11/2014 at 20:28 |

they're kinda making a comeback. We have a small little pinball museum here in Seattle that's basically a small pinball arcade. 30 or so machines.
My dad used to have a machine when I was a little kid. It's funny I remember it feeling modern and stuff, but when I see pictures of that particular machine on the internet ( king pin ) it looks totally archaic. Old. I feel old.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 20:28 |
|
I'm not old, but I still am out of the loop with video game talk. I was outside doing hoodrat shit with my friends or inside having sex in my formative years. Video games? Ain't nobody got time fo that!

Grow up in a desert where temps exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer. You may change your tune a bit.
Of course I also played dozens of role playing games in addition to playing multiple sports. Everyone makes different choices in life.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 20:44 |
|
I grew up in Phoenix, AZ, where temps routinely hit 110F. I've experienced a handful of 120+F degree days. If you grow up in it you should be used to it. Shit, I went for a jog during a gloriously dry 109F the other day. We used to have football practice outside in August.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 20:54 |
|
Tucson here. I stayed home some days during the summer as a kid when it was unbearable. Didn't stop me as a teen from playing every outdoor sport known to man. But before then, it was just too damn hot.
My son is in high school football now. I know the drill. =)
![]() 06/11/2014 at 21:17 |

I went to college in Tucson. Tucson was a nice break from Phoenix, as at least it still monsoons there.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 21:33 |

I'll give you that. And less asphalt/concrete. Still hot as hell though.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 22:24 |

This is the first racing game that I remember playing that I would classify as a racing game by today's standards. Its called Race Drivin' and it was too complex for my feeble kid brain to comprehend. Accelerating reduces my lateral grip?! Lol.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 22:29 |

50 is the new 40, 30 is the new 20, 10 is the new fetus.

Ivan 'Ironman' Stewart's Super Off Road was probably the first racing game I put some serious hours in on... Loved that game.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 22:33 |

That game was *awesome*.
![]() 06/11/2014 at 22:34 |

That game vexed me more than any other. I just couldn't do it. LOL.

Our first video console was a Pong machine. 3 game modes, 2 controllers, 1 colour.
![]() 06/12/2014 at 08:48 |

Yea, there are two I remember the most 'Comet' which is pretty plain and then when I was closer to 18 'The Addams Family' which is still one of my favorites, that sob is still quite expensive.

So, 13 is the new age of consent?
![]() 06/12/2014 at 09:25 |

Unfortunately, I think it's 26...
![]() 06/12/2014 at 09:45 |

Yup. They had 2 Addams Family units at the expo i went to and they were both always surrounded by a crowd. I think that's one of the more famous tables, along with Terminator 2.
